The Latino community is among one of the largest groups targeted by human trafficking. While there have been 25 different types of human trafficking identified, the two largest to plague the Latino community is that of Agriculture and Sex work.
Trafficking rings exist solely to lure victims and trap them in a vicious cycle. These rings send out recruiters to Mexico and other countries to lure individuals on false promises of employment within the U.S.
Contrary to popular belief, many of the individuals brought into the U.S. had obtained the proper identification forms and visas to allow them to work in the United States.
Traffickers confiscate the paperwork of these individuals and threaten them with deportation, death, or even harm to their families if the individual does not do what the trafficker wants. Oftentimes, these victims will work long hours, with little to no break times- and have to surrender their paycheck to their trafficker.
With no one to advocate for them, and often times having a language barrier, these victims are stuck in a constant cycle.
